You can copy objects in the repository both within a cabinet and into a different cabinet.
This topic refers to copying objects in regular repository cabinets. For information about copying structured documents in Product or Release containers, see Copying and Pasting a Structured Document into a Release.
To copy an object, right-click the object and select .
You can copy individual folder objects. However, you cannot copy an entire folder with all of its contained objects.
Tip: Before you copy an object, consider whether you can reuse an existing object instead of copying it.
Copying an object in the repository results in duplicate objects, each with a unique object ID in the repository. However:
- The copied object does not retain the history of the original object.
- If the original object references other objects, those references are maintained in the copied object, but the referenced objects are not themselves copied.
- If the original object is referenced by other objects, the copied object is not referenced by those objects.
For example, if you copy a DITA map that references DITA topics, the copy of the map references the original DITA topics. The topics themselves are not copied. However, if the original DITA map is itself referenced by a higher-level map, the copy of the map does not have a relationship with the higher-level map.
Important: A copied object inherits access controls from the folder into which it is copied. Those permissions may be different from those inherited by the source object.
These actions allow you to copy repository objects:
- Issuing the Copy command and pasting the results
- Copy and Paste
- Copying and pasting a DITA element with an ID attribute
- Drag and Drop while holding Ctrl key
- Creating a New XML Document using an existing document as a template
