Opening an object for editing checks it out of the repository and locks it.
Checking Out Structured Documents in an Editor
You can check out a structured document using the Workbench command, the Map Editor, the embedded editor, or an integrated WAN editor.

Right-click the object and click . The object opens in the XML editor specified in the Preferences Editor Settings dialog.

While holding down Shift, right-click the object in a Workbench view and select Edit. |

- In the Select Object dialog, navigate to and select the object, then click OK.

- From the Repository menu, click Open from Repository.
- In the Select from Structured Documents dialog, navigate to and select the object, then click OK.

The document is opened in the editor and locked.
Note: Structured document elements that are processed using the Global Substitution tool are checked out and locked during the batch job.
Checking Out Unstructured Files
To check out an unstructured file in the repository, use one of these methods:
- Double-click the file name.
- Execute the Edit command in the Workbench. Select the object, then use the Workbench Ribbon, a pinned command, or a context menu.
The file opens on the local machine in its native application, if available, and is locked.
